curry hill, mostly south indian, decent service, moderate price, good dosas

chennai garden, named after the south indian metropolis, got the much needed lift when it was first featured in the ny times! since then there has been a bunch of restaurants that have cropped up and then vanished into darkness... or sometimes reborn with a chinese wok in the kitchens, claiming to be indo-chine cuisine. chennai garden has maintained the focus, and has been serving up a mix of both southern and northern indian snacks. that's probably because the guy who runs the place is from mumbai and had worked in a south indian town. so he has an idea about both the cuisines. when i walked into the restaurant the visibility inside the resaurant dropped by about 50% because of smoke from the kitchen and bad vents. the food is moderate, and the service is just like any other indian restaurant... meaning, they do not believe in pushing the proverbial envelope. so the service is only decent. i'd recommend this restaurant as opposed to a bunch of others for dosas, but if you are in a mood for north indian, there are other options in the city.

fyi: if you are around the area check out the events in baruch college, or take a walk in the madison square park.
